Elsa Morante (1912-1985) was an Italian author whose writing often addressed persecution and injustice. After fleeing Fascist authorities during World War II, Morante traveled extensively while continuing to write prolifically; she later won the Viareggio literary prize, Strega Prize, and Prix Medicis. Morante's entrancing story concerns a Roman family enduring the intense privations of WW2--interlaced with very brief historical chronology of each of the pre-War, Wartime, and post-War period.

The Morante family name was found in the USA, the UK, and Scotland between 1840 and 1920. The most Morante families were found in the USA in 1920. In 1891 there were 2 Morante families living in Lancashire. This was 100% of all the recorded Morante's in the UK.

In addition to a brother, Mario, who died young, she had three more siblings, Aldo, Marcello and Maria. History was written nearly thirty years after Elsa Morante and Alberto Moravia spent a year in hiding among remote farming villages in the mountains south of Rome.
